History
[edit]Computime was founded in 1974 by Auyang Ho and is headquartered in Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, Sha Tin.[4] The company began as a designer and manufacturer of electronic clocks and timing devices, which is reflected in its name.[1] Auyang Ho graduated from South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology) with a degree in structural engineering.[6]
In its 50-year history, Computime has evolved from a family-owned business to a publicly traded company.[7] Initially, Computime started as a designer of digital clocks and then extended to be a contract manufacturer focusing on the manufacturing of cost-competitive electronic products.[7] The company later expanded its operations to include research and development and intellectual property development as well as branded business.[7]
In 1976, the company received the Chinese Manufacturers' Association New Product Award.[1] In 1980, Computime opened its first factory in Guangzhou, China, and established its first office in Los Angeles, United States, in 1982.[8][9] A factory was opened in Shenzhen, China in 1984, followed by new corporate headquarters in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, in 1989.[8]
In 1999, the company began investing in research and development facilities to develop proprietary technology, marking a shift from its original contract manufacturing model.[7][8] The company acquired Perception Digital in 2003 but divested it in 2004.[10] That same year, it opened a 1.5 million square foot manufacturing facility in Buji Technological Park, Buji, China.[8]
Computime also launched the SALUS Controls brand in the United Kingdom and Germany in 2005.[8] SALUS Poland was established in 2009, followed by SALUS Nordic in 2013 and SALUS Romania in 2014.[11] In 2010, Dr. King Owyang, brother of founder Auyang Ho, was appointed CEO, a position he held until April 2020.[12]
In 2017, Computime received Bloomberg's Listed Enterprise of the Year award and was recognized as one of Hong Kong's Outstanding Enterprises by Economic Digest.[13][8] The company relocated its headquarters to Hong Kong Science Park in 2018 and won the Technological Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Awards for Industries.[8]
Between 2019 and 2021, Computime expanded its manufacturing operations by opening factories in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Penang, Malaysia; and Guadalajara, Mexico.[14]
In 2021, the company purchased a 90 percent stake in Braeburn Systems and opened a center of excellence in Cluj, Romania.[15][8] In 2022 Computime's founder, Auyang Ho, retired, and his son, Bernard Auyang, was appointed group chairman.[1]
In August 2024, Computime signed a memorandum of understanding with Standard Chartered Bank regarding the potential for both firms to expand business and production lines in Vietnam. This MOU also focused on the provision of financing and treasury services by the bank.[16]
Bernard Auyang served as CEO from 2000 to 2009 and then again from April 2020.[7][17]
Initial Public Offering
[edit]Computime was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on October 9, 2006.[18] The company offered 200 million new shares at approximately HK$2 per share.[19] JPMorgan, DBS and HSBC were involved in the process.[19]
