[edit]Hi, a few days ago, I unilaterally renamed this article's name and uses of Santini Aichel's name to the German rendition of his name (Johann Blasius Santini Aichel). @FromCzech reverted this, since the identity of Santini Aichel is contentious.
I'd like to start a discussion here and advocate for the renaming of this article to a non-Czech form. Perhaps the Italian would be ideal? Santini Aichel was born in Prague to Anton Aichel, grandson of Italian (well, according to current borders, Swiss) mason Antonio Aichel, and Catherine Osten of Plzeň. Santini Aichel was baptized with a German name (Johann Blasius Aichel) and spent considerable time in Italy, later naming his Prague Atelier after the Italian form of his name ("Giovanni Battista Santini").
English sources, which are scant, render his name in all three forms, although the by far most comprehensive English treatment on Aichel available online, by Susan Gold in 1984 [1] , refers to his name in the German form, as do reviews of German-language sources, while acknowledging Czech spellings.[2] A mention of him as he is represented in Czech curricula render the Czech form [3], while passing references in other sources, including German ones, render his name in the Italian form [4].
I have not submitted a request for WP:RM because I have no strong feelings about whether the name should be put in its Italian or German form. I recognize that I acted rashly earlier. However, I contend the identification of his nationality as Czech and rendering of his name in the Czech form. Theodore Christopher (talk) 19:24, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- So briefly: "Giovanni Santini" and "Giovanni Battista Santini" cannot be compared, because Google includes references to many other people with the same names (including the mathematician Giovanni Sante Gaspero Santini); but I see no reason to believe that this is the most commonly used name. "Jan Santini" is clearly a more common form than "Johann Santini" according to Google hits and the statistics of occurrence in literature. The form "Jan Santini" is preferred in sources like The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Art and Architecture (2013), The Oxford Dictionary of Architecture (2015), Architectural Styles: A Visual Guide (2014), Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects (1982) and of course Jan Blažej Santini Aichel: A Brief Guide to the Life and Work of a Czech Baroque-gothic Genius (2014). Until it's an official RM, I see no reason to discuss it further. FromCzech (talk) 08:19, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
