Making a request

[edit]

Before asking volunteers to look for your source, try finding it yourself with the tools at your disposal.

In particular, eligible editors can use the Wikipedia Library, which gives access to content provided by numerous academic publishers.

  • Though we would prefer you to ask for a specific journal, article or work, we will accept open-ended questions. You can ask for all kinds of sources here, either on this page or by writing directly to an active user.
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, date and identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc. Indicate which article you need this for.
  • Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot send you full book/thesis copies. Narrow down your request to a specific chapter or page(s).
  • Add the {{Resolved}} template when your request is completed.
  • Filled requests are archived. Requests unfilled after three months will also be archived.

Fulfilling a request

[edit]
  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests, in full or in part. When fulfilling a part of a request, tell others which one so that they don't have to do the same work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{u|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}.
  • You can:
Copyright tips
  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Limit sharing content online that the copyright holders have restricted access to to the minimum level: only to the individuals who need it, only to the minimal degree necessary to fulfil the request and only to improve Wikipedia. We share content under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose to improve our articles or create new ones.
  • Whenever possible, share copies privately. You should not upload copyrighted copies from print publications or online databases for unrestricted distribution via open websites.

Looking for one book

[edit]

Looking for one book. I only remember the beginning of the piece. Some guy found a derelict computer, sat down at it and started doing something, and then he saw a man with a gun walk up to the desk, they looked at each other in silence for a while, then the guy mechanically pressed the Enter button and the man shot him back. The work was read in the 1990s or very early 2000s. The piece appeared no later than the 1990s (probably earlier). I also remember that the guy was doing something enthusiastically on the computer: at first he typed without looking at the screen, but the message on the computer monitor made him do his work more slowly and carefully. The phrases went something like this. The message on the computer screen made him work more carefully. Behind the desk stood a man with a gun in his hand. The guy had never seen a real gun, except in the movies, but he knew immediately what it was. The guy's hand dropped mechanically to the Enter button, and the same second the black muzzle of the gun burst into flames, ending his life.

Tropical Cyclone Report (could be from PAGASA)

[edit]

For 1977 Pacific typhoon season and User:Tavantius/Typhoon Thelma (1977)

Thanks, Tavantius (talk) 15:04, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tavantius: Is this what you are looking for? Zerotalk 04:33, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No. The one I'm looking for is published by PAGASA's TC Division. Tavantius (talk) 11:20, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tavantius:  Doing... I sent an e-mail to information@pagasa.dost.gov.ph asking a request. I hope they reply with a good sign, since I can't find a catalog entry in NLP, UP Diliman Tuklas, Rizal Lib, and Quezon City Public Library. If you'd like anything more, kindly tell me. RFNirmala (talk) 12:32, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Have you received an email from PAGASA yet? Tavantius (talk) 13:14, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
None, sadly. I also tried calling their phone number from PAGASA (dost.gov.ph) and no results. I could walk-in to their office as a last resort, but it would be at most a month before I have the free time to do so.
I sent an e-mail on October 7, and a follow-up on October 12 and today. I also included your request for the 1965 report. RFNirmala (talk) 00:35, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tavantius, I have bad news. PAGASA provides no response. I've been calling their trunklines multiple times, but they (the local lines themselves, not necessarily the data) are "unavailable" from what I received. I was being directed to different departments, then eventually the data specialists of "1122" line. When I call their local line, I receive that their line in unavailable at the moment. The best I can advise is send an email yourself and be as detailed as possible (e.g. your info: name, organization, which they asked from me). You can ask again in WP:TAMBAY. For me, it would be very unlikely I'll send the cyclone report this month (or year, even). I'm sorry. RFNirmala (talk) 03:04, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At the very least, thanks for trying! Tavantius (talk) 04:10, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tavantius: The original is from Cornell University, and I believe the catalog entry is this one. There's a list at the top of the page listing resources editors have access to. One of them mentions they have access to Cornell's collection, so you could try asking them. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 18:02, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info! Tavantius (talk) 15:06, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PAGASA cyclone report

[edit]

For User:Tavantius/sandbox3 (1967 Pacific typhoon season). I want to get this to GA or FA status and it seems like they have reports on the impacts of many tropical cyclones in 1967.

Thanks, Tavantius (talk) 12:58, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tavantius: Forgive my confusion if I'm mistaken, but are you sure you want this 1965 publication for the events of 1967? Bsoyka (tcg) 22:51, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The date is wrong but the snippets of the book I can see that it includes the cyclones in 1967. Tavantius (talk) 22:54, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Monograph of the genus Hypericum

[edit]

Hello all, I'm a specialist who's done a lot of work on the genus Hypericum, but my recent work has been stymied because I can't access a source. The main corpus of work on this genus was done by Norman Robson, who produced a monograph over the latter half of the 20th century. The first few volumes are freely available, but I've been unable to find the later volumes anywhere. If anyone has access to these papers or knows where to find them I would be incredibly grateful:

  1. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae). 5(2). Section 17. Hirtella to 19
  2. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae) 5(1). Sections 10. Olympia to 15/16. Crossophyllum
  3. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae) 9. Addenda, corrigenda, keys, lists and general discussion
  4. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Clusiaceae). Section 9. Hypericum sensu lato (part 3): Subsection 1. Hypericum series 2. Senanensia, subsection 2. Erecta and section 9b. Graveolentia
  5. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Guttiferae) 4(1). Sections 7. Roscyna to 9. Hypericum sensu lato (part 1)
  6. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Guttiferae). 6. Sections 20. Myriandra to 28. Elodes
  7. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Guttiferae) 8. Sections 29. Brathys (part 2) and 30. Trigynobrathys

And any others you might be able to find! Thank you in advance, being able to access these works will unlock my ability to comprehensively cover this fascinating genus. Fritzmann (message me) 13:29, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fritzmann2002: #4 is available here through WP:TWL. I've requested the rest via my library and should hopefully have them in the next 24 hours! Bsoyka (tcg) 16:33, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's great news! Thank you very much! Fritzmann (message me) 17:06, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fritzmann2002: I've received 4 back so far—I sent you a Google Drive folder link by email containing them, and I'll add the others to the same folder as they come in! Bsoyka (tcg) 16:10, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic news! Thank you so much for your work in finding these, please let me know if there's anything you need in the future that I can help with; I'd be more than happy to lend a hand in return. Fritzmann (message me) 18:38, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fritzmann2002: Just got a physical copy of #6, and it's 142 pages long. Would it be alright if I share the table of contents and you select the sections you want? (Per the notes at the top of this page and for copyright reasons, we generally can't share entire copies of such long works.) Bsoyka (tcg) 23:56, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fritzmann2002: I can't keep this one checked out for very long—I'll have to return it soon unless I hear from you, but I can easily borrow it again later. Bsoyka (tcg) 14:45, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bsoyka, that's alright, I have my hands full with the other volumes at the moment. Thank you again for your help so far! Fritzmann (message me) 19:21, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The "cladodont level" sharks of the Pennsylvanian black shales of central North America, 1985

[edit]
Cladodont, Stethacanthus, Phoebodus, Symmorium, Elasmobranchii, Symmoriiformes, Fish jaw

I already have access to the 1979 thesis version of this article in full, via this [1] ProQuest link, however I do not have access to the final published draft. This article redefines the Cladodont sharks and provides the initial description for the order Symmoriiformes and significant information on Cladoselache, Stethacanthus, Phoebodus and Cobelodus, as well as many taxa that do not yet have finished articles due to the lack of reliable sources. Additional information is provided regarding the evolution of Elasmobranchii and the evolution of fish jaws, which can also be added to these articles. I am under the impression that theses are not suitable citations for Wikipedia, and I assume a significant amount of revision took place between the publication of the thesis and the final article. I'm not able to provide a paywalled link to the article's 1985 version, nor a DOI.

Huge thank you to anyone who manages to track this down! Gasmasque (talk) 19:02, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested a digital copy through my library. Not sure if they'll go through with it—I know they have page count limits for what they're allowed to share digitally. If that doesn't work, I have access to a physical copy and can scan at least a few parts myself. Bsoyka (tcg) 17:58, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I know it's a pretty huge paper, so it might not be reasonable to ask you to scan the whole thing. I really appreciate the help, and here's to hoping you can get ahold of the whole thing. Gasmasque (talk) 18:17, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They just sent me the 1979 copy from ProQuest... I'll grab the physical copy in around a week, following the holiday. Bsoyka (tcg) 04:05, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Proquest copy seems to be the only digitized version. Worst case scenario I can use that, it doesn't seem to be all that different from the final draft, but I'm hugely appreciative that you're willing to get ahold of/scan in the physical version yourself. Hopefully it all works out, and thank you for offering the help! Gasmasque (talk) 07:09, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had hoped they would scan the physical copy (or have another library do so), but I've found they get confused sometimes with differing years of the same article. I'll definitely get the physical copy when I can! Bsoyka (tcg) 17:14, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just thought I would ask because it has been a while, but have you had any luck tracking down a physical copy? No worries if not, just curious. Gasmasque (talk) 15:42, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Creston saxophone sonata

[edit]
  1. Frigo, Connie (2005): "Commissioning works for saxophone: A history and guide for performers". University of South Carolina (DMA thesis). Worldcat, Proquest. (Relevant parts are chapters two and three).
  2. Hulsebos, Mark (1989): "Cecil Leeson : the pioneering of the concert saxophone in American from 1921 to 1941". Ball State University (DA thesis). Worldcat. (Should have a section based c. 1930–1940 with references to Creston).
  3. Liley, Thomas (1988): "A teacher's guide to the interpretation of selected music for saxophone". Indiana University (DMus thesis). IUCAT. (Should have a section on the Sonata).
  4. Rascher, Sigurd (1968): "Music for the Saxophone, Part 1". The Music Journal, Vol. 26, Iss. 4. Proquest. (Around page 30).
  5. Sibbing, Robert (1970): "An analytical study of the published sonatas for saxophone by American composers". University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (DEd thesis). Proquest, Worldcat. (Section on Creston starts at page 53).

I'm drafting an article offline on Paul Creston's saxophone sonata (will transfer to my sandbox soon) and came across these references in multiple sources. I've tried to be as specific as possible with pages, etc., but cannot access the ToC for several of these. Priority is Hulsebos, Frigo and Sibbing, but any help is much appreciated.

Newspapers etc

Hi all, a few requests for TWL stuff that I can't access... [2], [3], [4], [5], [6].

Also The NYT and The Times.

Sorry it's so much! It's regarding my G13 request for Domain.

And last but not least, if anyone fancies doing a general search of TWL for e.g. "James Herbert" AND "Domain", in case there's anything academic written on it, that'd be cool, although possibly a PITA  :)

Thanks for any help! Cheers, SerialNumber54129 11:23, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Serial Number 54129: Yes Sent NYT and The Times. NYT should be accessible via the link you sent though. As for the BNA links, could you provide any other info on them? I could try to see if I have access through a different database.

There's this weird workaround I found. If you signup for a BNA account (no credit card/payment info needed) it lets you view 3 pages for free. Clicking on the link you gave returns an access denied error, but if you strip the URL to just the number parts, it works! (Delete everything before and including "%252fbl%252f", delete everything after and including "&rememberme", replace all "%252f" with /, and stick https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/ infront of the first number) I used that to get the first two articles you requested (the other free page was used for testing). The following three URLs should work for the remaining three BNA articles, if you sign up:

Long shot?: Thought currents in English literature article

[edit]
  • 向山 泰子 [Yasuko Mukoyama] (February 1962). "Cather's Love of Area [Cather's Love of Place]". 英文学思潮 [Thought currents in English literature]. 35. Aoyama Gakuin University: 71–82. ISSN 0910-500X.

This gives the 1962 date, although this English language bibliography (p 141) gives 1963. My library's metadata suggests 1962. The true title is not known; the English bibliography and WebOPAC give different ones.

Relevant WorldCat entries may include 21432288 and 1058811681.

I've sent in an ILL request to my library but I'm not sure whether they'll be able to fulfill this. Given what I know about Yasuko Mukoyama, the article will probably be useful in an article like My Ántonia or a similar novel article.

Details on Little Rock tornado death from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

[edit]

I'm working on an article on a tornado in Little Rock, and am currently attempting to explain the one indirect death. The only free source I can find mentions the death as being from a heart attack but does not tie it to the tornado itself. I found this Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article that may explain the situation surrounding their death but I cannot access as it is paywalled. The article is Draft:2023 Little Rock tornado - anyone with access to the source, I would greatly appreciate your help here. Cheers! Departure– (talk) 15:37, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two Czech botany articles by J. Chrtek and Z. Slavíková

[edit]
  • Chrtek, J.; Slavíková, Z. (1999). "Genera and families of the Droserales order". Novit. Bot. Univ. Carol. Praha 13: 39-46. Prague. ISSN 0862-5158.
  • Chrtek, J.; Slavíková, Z. (1996). "Comments on the families Drosophyllaceae and Droseraceae". Journal of the National Museum (Prague), Natural History Series 165(1-4): 139-141. Prague: National Museum. ISSN 1802-6842.

Hi, I'm trying to find copies of the above two articles by the Czech botanists Chrtek and Slavíková, for a complete rewrite of Taxonomy of Drosera that I'm working on in userspace. These are quite widely cited but the actual papers seem to be pretty obscure and I haven't been able to find them anywhere online. The 1999 article is from Novitates botanicae Universitatis Carolinae which unfortunately has only a partial online archive, see [7]; according to WorldCat the Natural History Museum in London is the only library that holds it. The 1996 one is from this publication: [8], again unfortunately the online archive peters out about 2000 and WorldCat doesn't list any UK libraries holding anything earlier than 2007. Difficult request but if anyone can help I'd be really grateful! YFB ¿ 11:12, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Yummifruitbat: For #2, you may be seeing nothing for anything earlier than 2007 because the journal was renamed in 2007. The original name was Časopis Národního muzea. Řada přírodovědná OCLC 29042559.
Doing... #1 via ILL but if anyone can get it earlier, feel free.
Doing... #2, but I'm not entirely clear on whether my library has this issue. It says roc.160(1991)-169(2000), v.170:n.1/4 (2001:Dec.) - v.175:n.3/4 (2006:Dec.), and I have no idea what the roc. abbreviation means, so I'll go later today and take a look. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 12:08, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing! Thank you. I think roc. is an abbreviation for something like "edition" as the numbers align with the volume nos - 165 is the one for 1996 in #2. YFB ¿ 16:50, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Yummifruitbat: Yup, the library does have it. Yes Sent #2 ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:07, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Book on "Orphic Hymns"

[edit]
  • Fayant, Marie-Christine (2014). Hymnes Orphiques. Paris: Les Belles Lettres. ISBN 9782251005935.

For Orphic Hymns; this book is one of the three major studies of the collection from the last 20 years. It would be really great to have all of the introduction and discussion at the front (all of the pages marked with roman numerals), the "Annexe" and indices (p. 667 to the end of the book), and the commentary (which is somewhere in pp. 1–666, probably the last part). Assuming this is not too much of the book to ask for, this would be a great help – a big thankyou in advance, Michael Aurel (talk) 22:07, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael Aurel: Would that be everything in the book apart from the Hymns themselves? On a side note, the TOC is available online here. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 21:41, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ARandomName123: Yes, everything except the hymns, as they're marked in that TOC (ie., everything except pp. 1–666) – I had been hoping for the commentary as well, which I assumed was a distinct section within pp. 1–666, but that TOC seems to indicate otherwise, meaning the commentary probably comes after each individual hymn, so better to exclude it I think (as selectively picking out all those pages would be a right pain). – Michael Aurel (talk) 22:13, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael Aurel: Well, my university's library does hold this book, but I'm currently away for winter break. If anyone else wants to step in and help, please do, but if not, the earliest I can get back is in around two weeks. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 19:30, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
