A few days left...
[edit]This section is pinned and will not be automatically archived until 20:25, 5 November 2025 (UTC). |
As we approach the beginning of the wikicup 2025 I wish to bring attention to a few useful tools for the contest.
- Wikipedia:Good article review circles You get a review and review another in exchange, a very simple way to get atleast 40 points.
- Wikipedia:Former featured and good topics Picking up a topic and restoring it shouldn't take too long depending on what you pick.
- Wikipedia:Reward board Provides other incentives to produce quality content
While most May find this redundant I hope atleast one person benefits from any of these. Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 11:22, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for posting these links. I've pinned this section for the duration of the 2025 WikiCup. Epicgenius (talk) 20:25, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
How to put in a GANR
[edit]I manually put it in on my scoring page? Do I need to do that? Should I add it to all the rest manually or will a bot do that? Should I take it off my page? History6042😊 (Contact me) 00:32, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- @History6042, you put it under the "GANR: 5 points" section of your submissions page. A bot will take care of the rest. Note that you have to use a pound sign,
#
, and not an asterisk,*
, when linking each submission. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:41, 1 January 2025 (UTC)- Okay, thank you. History6042😊 (Contact me) 00:42, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Quick question
[edit]I got List of pholidotans promoted on December 24, 2024, less than two weeks ago. So I was wondering if this nomination is eligible for a spot in my submission page or must all work be completed/promoted in 2025? ✿ WolveríneX-eye ✿ 06:03, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- If this was between rounds, then you'd be able to claim the points for the future round, but as this was before the WikiCup started, I'm afraid it would be too soon for it to garner any points in the 2025 WikiCup. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 08:57, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Lee is correct. Unfortunately, the list would've needed to have been promoted to FL during the Cup itself, within calendar year 2025. – Epicgenius (talk) 16:44, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Question
[edit]I have several GANs and an active FL nomination that have had their reviews opened prior to me entering WikiCup, including one that passed after I entered WikiCup. Do the reviews have to be started during the WikiCup round period to qualify, or do they only need to be completed during the WikiCup round period? I want to double check so I know what I should and should not list on my submissions page. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 21:55, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- As far as the rules state, the content date matters for when it passes. In previous years, we've had to have it nominated after the 1st, but that's no longer the case. I believe anything that passes after the first is elegible. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 22:08, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Gotcha. Thank you! Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 22:10, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Bonuses
[edit]I don't understand the bonuses for GAs. Would I have to get GAs on different language Wikipedia? Or does it not have to be me? Do they even need to be GAs on the other languages or do they just need to exist? History6042😊 (Contact me) 22:34, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hi! It's based on how many Wikipedias that article exists on. For example, you recently did a review for Branislav Djurdjev, that article exists on six other Wikipedias (so, 7 in total), so would be worth that many bonus points (x1.2, which works out as 7 additional bonus points). Those articles don't have to be GA (they almost always aren't). Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 22:45, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Just so there's no ambiguity, the nominator of Branislav Djurdjev is eligible for bonus points, not the reviewer. Unless I'm mistaken? Thebiguglyalien (talk) 23:29, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, sorry, it was literally just the first article I found that had some interwiki links. You don't score bonuses like that for reviews Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 23:30, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Lee is correct. The nominator of the GA or FA will get bonus points based on how many languages the article had been translated into as of December 31, 2024. The articles on the foreign-language wikis do not need to hold any quality status; the bot merely checks whether the articles exist in another language. – Epicgenius (talk) 03:47, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Scoring Featured List Candidate Reviews
[edit]Do FLCRs go under FACRs on the submission page? Is there another section they're scored in?
Side question: it appears we have two different versions of the scoring table at Wikipedia:WikiCup and Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. The only real difference is "Featured List Review" vs "Featured List Candidate Review" but the former seems to be less specific - does a review of a WP:FLRC count as a "Featured List Review" (I am assuming no because that's not how it works for articles)? Should we make the scoring table a template to avoid confusion? ~ Matthewrb Let's connect · Here to help 19:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Matthewrb, great questions. (1) Yes, FLC reviews and FAC reviews are submitted under the same section, (2) no, they are not scored in a separate section. (3) Featured list reviews are the same as Featured list candidate reviews; we changed "featured list reviews" to "featured list candidate reviews" last year but forgot to update the table fully. – Epicgenius (talk) 20:06, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

Changed my flag
[edit]Hello, I recently changed my flag from the flag of city of Rome to the imperial flag of Roman Empire ( see here); However city of Rome's flag is still being displayed at the main page of WikiCup The AP (talk) 11:30, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- @TheAstorPastor, the displayed flag is determined by the code at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16. —Kusma (talk) 15:35, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Kusma Can I change it or do I leave it to the judges? The AP (talk) 15:36, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- If you know what you are doing, be WP:BOLD and just fix anything you can fix yourself. —Kusma (talk) 15:41, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- Changed The AP (talk) 15:48, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't see this flag change before. The flag change and accompanying edit seem fine, and Kusma is correct that the Participant16 page is what you should edit if you want to change your flag after you sign up. I will edit the signups page at some point to make this more clear. Epicgenius (talk) 16:12, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @Epicgenius, just want to let you know that there should be space between the flag and my name (check in the table at main page of WikiCup ) - I tried to add the space but broke it The AP (talk) 19:05, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- @TheAstorPastor, thanks for letting me know. Seems like the space was inadvertently removed when you swapped out your flag. I've added the space. Epicgenius (talk) 19:25, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

Possible rule violation
[edit]@History6042: I will start out by saying that this is a bit of an awkward thing to post but I am doing to anyways. I feel that History6042 has broken the rules of the cup. Specifically the one about FACR/FLCR it reads "Only high-quality reviews will be accepted... Generally, a high-quality review will contain at least 4-5 pieces or 100 words of substantial feedback". So where I feel History6042 went wrong is claiming credit for this:
The entirety of the feedback is literally add two commas. Now I understand the value of shorter reviews like this one but IMHO its not worth five points. History6042 is the most prolific FACR/FLCR contribtor so far in the cup nearly over double the next highest so it may be possible there is more like this. Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 10:11, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, I will remove anything under 4 suggestions, sorry. History6042😊 (Contact me) 12:36, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Any review under 4 issues done by me have been either expanded or removed. History6042😊 (Contact me) 12:51, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- History6042, we did leave a comment on your talk page regarding the quality/length of your reviews. We aren't looking for 5 or more comments, we are looking for a thorough review of the article in question.
- There's nothing wrong with a review that is on an article that is clearly very much past the GA criteria, but in the hundreds of reviews I've seen, it's incredibly rare. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 18:21, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- @History6042, Lee has basically summed up my thoughts on this. We want to see that you're thoroughly reviewing against the criteria. Some articles are pretty much perfect, which is uncommon, but in such cases we still would like to see how the article/list stacks up against each of the criteria; you could write a paragraph comparing the nomination against the criteria. For example, if you really did not find any other issues on List of Mingxing films, you can say something like "Aside from the issues I mentioned, the prose is engaging to a professional standard, meeting criterion 1. The lead meets criterion 2 because it summarizes how many films of each type were produced, as well as the dates they were produced..." and so on. It doesn't need to be a whole essay; just explain how you think the article or list meets the FA/FL criteria already. – Epicgenius (talk) 18:52, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's fine. Just a reminder that all submissions are checked by WikiCup judges. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 18:21, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, I will start doing more in depth reviews. Thank you for letting me know of these issues. History6042😊 (Contact me) 20:55, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
"Sorted" WikiCup table is less usable than before
[edit]The main table is now sorted by score instead of alphabetically. This is not an improvement: previously it was already easy to sort by score (just click on the sort links in the score column) and we had alphabetic sort order, but now it is no longer possible to sort alphabetically. I find that annoying because it means I need to use ctrl-F to find myself. Can we have (a) alphabetical order or (b) return to signup order or (c) add sortkeys to Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16 so it is possible to sort the table alphabetically? —Kusma (talk) 22:17, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Technically it wasn't possible to sort by alphabetical before, and the default sort was based on signup order prior to this year. I strongly believe that score makes the most sense for default sorting, but I would very much like to see alphabetical be supported. Currently the user column sorts based on flag name I believe. Hey man im josh (talk) 23:57, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Kusma, I made an adjustment to the Participant16 page. You should now be able to sort by username. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:40, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- Great work, thank you! —Kusma (talk) 08:47, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
