This will be the second Recopa Sudamericana participation for both Botafogo and Racing. The former played the 1994 edition which they lost to fellow Brazilian side São Paulo, while the latter previously contested the Recopa in 1989, losing to Nacional from Uruguay.[2]
The Recopa Sudamericana will be played on a home-and-away two-legged basis, with the Copa Libertadores champions hosting the second leg. If tied on aggregate at the end of the second leg, 30 minutes of extra time will be played. If still tied after extra time, a penalty shoot-out will be used to determine the winners (Regulations Article 17).[3]
