2031 FIFA Women's World Cup Qualification (AFC)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2031 AFC Women's World Cup Qualifiers marks a historic shift in the qualification process for the FIFA Women's World Cup in Asia. For the first time, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will host a standalone competition to determine its representatives for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This new format will be implemented for the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup onwards.

Previously, AFC representatives were decided through the AFC Women's Asian Cup or the Asian Games. According to AFC the new structure aims to provide a dedicated and comprehensive pathway for teams to qualify for the World Cup. [1]

Format

[edit]

The qualification tournament consists of three rounds:

Round 1

[edit]

The bottom-ranked teams, based on the FIFA Women's World Ranking, will compete in this stage. Teams will be grouped into single round-robin, centralised leagues, depending on the number of entries. The top teams from each group will advance to Round 2.

Round 2

[edit]

A total of 24 teams will participate, including the higher-ranked teams granted direct entry to this stage. - The teams will be divided into six groups of four, competing in a single round-robin, centralised league format. The top two teams from each group (12 in total) will qualify for Round 3.

Round 3

[edit]

This stage features three groups of four teams each, competing in a home-and-away league format.

Assuming the current slot allocation is maintained by FIFA, the top two in each group will qualify for the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup whilst the two best third placed teams will qualify for the Intercontinental play-off tournament. [2]
