Archeblade

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archeblade is a free-to-play 3D multiplayer fighting game developed by Codebrush Games, a now-defunct studio based in Seoul, South Korea. Launched on Steam in 2013, the game merges traditional fighting game mechanics with aspects of MOBAs and FPS games, offering a unique combat experience.[1]

Gameplay

[edit]

Archeblade features a combat system centered around combos executed via keyboard and mouse inputs, demanding precision and strategy. The game includes various modes like Team Deathmatch, Free for All, Capture the Flag, and Last Team Standing, each with unique strategic elements. Maps in the game contain environmental hazards, adding complexity to the battles.[2]

  • Characters: There are 14 unique characters, each inspired by a Korean fantasy novel, offering diverse playstyles and special abilities known as "Rage Skills".
  • Rage Skills: These are powerful abilities unique to each character, which can change the tide of battle when used at the right moment.

Development and Release

[edit]

Developed with Unreal Engine 3, Archeblade was released as a free-to-play title on Steam, where it received a "Mostly Positive" review with 73% of 7,669 user reviews being positive.[1] However, after the initial launch, updates and active development ceased, leading to the game being considered **abandoned**. Codebrush Games, the developer, is no longer operational, having announced the cessation of development for Archeblade in 2014 due to financial issues.[3] By 2025, the game's servers have seen a significant decline in activity, with many players referring to it as "dead" due to no new content or balance patches.

Community Efforts

[edit]

Despite its abandonment, the game has a dedicated fanbase that has taken on roles such as maintaining servers and creating community guides. Efforts to translate parts of the Korean novel which inspired the game's characters are also noted within the community.[4]

Reception

[edit]

Archeblade was praised for its fresh approach to the fighting game genre, character diversity, and the integration of different gameplay mechanics. However, it was criticized for issues like clunky animations, balance problems, and the lack of ongoing development leading to its current state.[5] Archeblade was reviewed by Engadget,[6] and Gry-Online.[7]

Cultural Impact

[edit]

While Archeblade did not achieve mainstream success or longevity, it left a niche following within the gaming community, particularly for those interested in the blend of fighting and MOBA mechanics. Its character designs and unique gameplay have been discussed in various gaming forums, with some players and modders still active in keeping the game's memory alive.[4]
