Avinash began his political career as president of the United Students Organization. He campaigned for Nehru, who contested Andhra Pradesh from Kankipadu mandal in Krishna district.[2] He was also a Student JAC Convener for the Samaikyandhra Movement, and his efforts to reach approximately 100,000 students garnered state attention.

He participated in the Samaikyandhra Movement Jala Deeksha and student rallies.[3][4][5] Following the division of the state, he advocated for Special Status for Andhra Pradesh, including agitations and bike rallies. Avinash served as the Andhra Pradesh State Youth Congress President and Vijayawada Parliamentary Congress President during his tenure with the the Indian National Congress.

Devineni contested the Vijayawada Lok Sabha Elections in 2014 as a candidate for the the Indian National Congress party,[6][2][7] but was defeated by Kesineni Srinivas of the Telugu Desam Party. In 2016, he and his father joined the Telugu Desam Party. N. Chandrababu Naidu, then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, appointed him as the State President of Telugu Yuvata, the youth wing of the the Telugu Desam Party.

Avinash again contested in the 2019 Gudivada (Assembly constituency), Andhra Pradesh, against Kodali Nani of the YSR Congress Party, which won the 2019 General Elections, including the Gudivada (Assembly constituency).[8][9]

In November 2019, Avinash resigned from the the Telugu Desam Party and joined the YSR Congress Party.[10][11][12][13] He is currently serving as Vijayawada East (Assembly constituency) in-charge for the YSR Congress Party under the leadership of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy.[14]

Electoral Performance

2014 Indian General Election

[edit]

Devineni Avinash contested the 2014 Indian general election as the Indian National Congress candidate for the Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency. At 26 years old, he was the youngest among the major candidates, and his nomination followed the exit of then-Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, who had quit politics after the Andhra Pradesh bifurcation."TDP, Congress, YSRC debutants test political waters in Vijayawada". The Economic Times. PTI. 5 May 2014. Retrieved 10 January 2025. The election was held in the aftermath of the creation of Telangana, with public sentiment largely against the Congress in the remaining Andhra Pradesh region."Win or lose, I will serve people: Devineni Avinash". The Hindu. 1 May 2014. Retrieved 10 January 2025.

Avinash faced strong competition from Kesineni Srinivas (TDP–BJP alliance) and Koneru Rajendra Prasad (YSR Congress Party). Despite a focused campaign, Avinash received only 39,751 votes, finishing third with 3.33% of the total vote share."Vijayawada Lok Sabha Constituency Results 2014". Elections.in. Retrieved 10 January 2025. Kesineni Srinivas won with 592,696 votes (~49.6%) followed by the YSRCP candidate with 517,834 votes (~43.7%)."Constituency Wise Result Status – Andhra Pradesh 2014". Election Commission of India. Retrieved 10 January 2025.

The Congress party’s vote share collapsed dramatically across the state, attributed largely to public discontent over the bifurcation. Despite the loss, Avinash continued his political career and, in 2016, joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)."Devineni Avinash joins TDP". The Hans India. 12 April 2016.

2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election

[edit]

In the 2019 state assembly elections, Avinash contested the Gudivada Assembly constituency as a TDP candidate against incumbent Kodali Sri Venkateswara Rao (Kodali Nani) of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP)."Gudivada to witness tough fight between local Kodali Nani, non-local Devineni Avinash". The New Indian Express. 28 March 2019. Retrieved 10 January 2025.

During the campaign, Avinash emphasized his family’s political legacy and commitment to local development. However, he was criticized by his opponent for being an “outsider” to the constituency. Kodali Nani, a three-term legislator and local strongman, campaigned on his existing tenure and party’s growing popularity.

Kodali Nani won the election with 89,833 votes (53.5%), while Avinash secured 70,354 votes (41.9%)."Gudivada Assembly Constituency Election Result 2019". Retrieved 10 January 2025. Following the defeat, in November 2019, Avinash resigned from the TDP and joined the ruling YSRCP in the presence of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy."Devineni Avinash joins YSRCP". The Hans India. 15 November 2019. Retrieved 10 January 2025. He cited internal politics within TDP and a desire to support the welfare agenda of the YSRCP as reasons for his switch.
