Background

Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic is a Serbian-born[1][2] South African editor and publisher[3][4] known for co-founding[5] and editing[6] Daily Maverick, an independent online news daily launched in 2009[7][8][9]. Prior to this, he was a book publisher in Yugoslavia[10] before immigrating to South Africa in 1991[11]. He has held various editorial roles in prominent publications[12] and has been influential in shaping modern South African journalism[13][14][15].

Career

Brkic co-founded[16] the online news daily Daily Maverick in 2009[17], serving as its editor-in-chief until he stepped down on 30 October 2024[18][19][20]. Under his leadership, Daily Maverick has grown significantly[21][22]. Prior to this, he launched several publications including Timbila, the South African National Parks magazine, and Brainstorm, an IT business magazine co-founded with Jovan Regasek[23] in 2001. He also founded the print business magazine Maverick[24] in 2005 and its sister publication Empire in 2007, both of which ceased operations in 2008[25].

Brkic is the founder and leader of Project Kontinuum[26], a global initiative established in 2024[27] aimed at reaffirming the positive role of news media [28][29][30][31]within the global community.

Notable Achievements

Brkic received the prestigious Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity in 2018[32][33][34][35] for spearheading the GuptaLeaks[36] investigation, which exposed corruption involving the Gupta family and former South African President Jacob Zuma[37]. This investigation was recognized internationally, winning the Global Shining Light Award in 2019[38][39][40][41] alongside Rappler, a Filipino publication founded by Nobel Prize laureate Maria Ressa.
