Comment: Not sure how they would meet WP:NPROF?Granted, WP:NACADEMIC #5 provides for notability based on a named chair, but that means a permanent seat, whereas it would appear that the George Sarton Chair at Ghent, referred to in this draft, is an annual one? David P. Baker is an American professor of Sociology, Education, and Demography at Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on the global impact of education, particularly the emergence of the "schooled society" and the influence of education and science on cultural transformations.[1]
Academic Career
[edit]Baker earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University, an M.S. in Communication Research from Boston University, and a B.A. in Psychology from Albion College.[2]
He has published extensively on the sociology of education, examining the role of education systems in shaping modern society. His work investigates how formal education contributes to economic development, social mobility, and scientific knowledge.[3]
Research Focus
[edit]Baker’s recent studies analyze the historical relationship between higher education and the growth of scientific knowledge from 1900 to 2020. His book, Global Mega-Science: Universities, Research Collaborations, and Knowledge Production, explores the role of universities in advancing science globally.[4]
Honors and Fellowships
[edit]Baker is a Non-residential Fellow at The Brookings Institution and has contributed to research on global education policy and innovation.[5] He was awarded the George Sarton Medal and named the 2023–24 George Sarton Chair in the History of Science at Ghent University in Belgium.[6]
