IC 5117 is a young, compact planetary nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It was discovered in 1905 by Scottish-American astronomer Williamina Fleming. It is distinguished by its small angular size of approximately 1.2 arcseconds, making it appear almost stellar when observed.[1]
Physical Characteristics
[edit]Density and Temperature
[edit]The surrounding gas of the nebula is notably dense, with an estimated 90,000 molecules per cubic centimeter, and maintains a temperature around 12,000 Kelvin. The central star is even hotter, with an estimated temperature of 120,000 Kelvin.
