"Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari" is a 2013 Indian film song composed by Vishal–Shekhar and sung by Indian singer Arijit Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan[1] and Neeti Mohan for the soundtrack of the 2013 Indian masala film Chennai Express, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.[2][3]
Background
[edit]The song marks the first released song where Arijit Singh rendered for Shah Rukh Khan, though Singh recorded the song Manwa Laage for Happy New Year (2014) featuring Khan, prior to the recording of the song "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari", however released much later.[4][5]
Release
[edit]The song was released on 1 July 2013. The song was released on 9 October 2013 on YouTube and got more than 326 million views on YouTube.[6]
In the song, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone were seen doing some basic Kathakali and Bharat Natyam moves.[7] The song is choreographed by Farah Khan.[8][9] The picture of the song also shows a brief scene of Puli Kali, which is the tiger folk dance of north Kerala. Its followed by a few seconds of leaping, lithe Kalaripayattu artists. The background is showcased with decorated elephants of Kerala's temple festivals.[10]
Production
[edit]The song was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Vishal–Shekhar. The song sequence for "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari" from the movie was filmed in Munnar Tea Plantation and in the village Devikulam, a hill station in Kerala. Last scenes were filmed at Pamban Bridge.[11]
Reception
[edit]Critical reception
[edit]The song received mixed response from critics.
Devesh Sharma from Filmfare praised the vocals by the lead singer particularly Arijit Singh and stated that the "nonsensical lyrics are buoyed by the verve shown by the singers".[12] Mohar Basu revieweing from koimoi found the lyrics appealing and praised the singers vocal quality.[13] Joginder Tuteja from Rediff.com, found the beats of the song quite similar to "Dildara" from Tashan (2008) and felt that the "song stands out because of its simplicity".[14] Reviewers from CNN-IBN found difficult to slot the genre of the song, and felt the vocals by Neeti Mohan, Sunidhi Chauhan and Singh makes the song worth a hear with their talent.[15]
Anand Holla reviewing for Mumbai Mirror concluded that the song is "bearable if you don't mind how simplistic its lyrics are".[16] Bollywood Hungama's Rajiv Vijayakar criticise the composition of the song and stated "The lyrics are smart but a tad too phonetics-oriented and the feverish pace leaves no breathing space for any singer to shine".[17] Hindustan Times's Nirmika Singh criticise the lyrics of the song and found the song entertaining only in bits, though it is blessed with a hummable tune.[18]
