The Museum of Tautavel (French official name: Musée de Tautavel - Centre europé-en de Préhistoire) is a museum located in Tautavel, in the French department of Pyrénées-Orientales.[1]
History and development
[edit]After the discovery of a 450,000-year-old skull of a pre-Neanderthal man (Homo heidelbergenses) in the Arago cave near the Catalan village of Tautavel in 1971, a small museum was set up there to present special finds. It was run as an offshoot of the Sorbonne University in Paris. In 1992, the museum was extended to 1500 square metres and declared a centre for prehistoric research in Europe. It set new standards in science, museum technology and museum didactics. The museum presents original finds of human fossils and tools from the Mesolithic period on several levels. There are also numerous animal fossils from that period (bears, lions, ungulates, etc.) and regional archaeological artefacts dating back to the Iron Age. In addition to the original finds, dioramas with people and animals and the reconstruction of the Arago cave are particular attractions. In the coming years, a modernisation and significant expansion of the ageing exhibition is planned.[1][2][3][4]
Museum didactics
[edit]The museum is known for its outstanding collections, but also for its cultural programme. Every year, special exhibitions expand the exhibition. During the school holidays, workshops on prehistoric techniques are offered to the public, as well as numerous other activities. The Musée de Tautavel is part of the EPCC CERP de Tautavel (Établissement public de coopération culturelle), which also includes the European Centre for Prehistoric Research, where most of the researchers work at UMR 7194 of the CNRS, which brings together the University of Perpignan - Via Domitia and the Department of Prehistory of the MNHN of Paris.[5]
European Centre for Prehistoric Research (CERP)
[edit]Researchers and students in archaeology, palaeoanthropology, palynology, palaeontology, archaeozoology, geology and other subjects work in the collections of the museum and the research centre on objects and fossils, mainly from the excavations at Caune de l'Arago[5]
