From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yosef (Yossi) Buganim (born March 5, 1977) is an Israeli scientist, professor, and entrepreneur specializing in stem cell biology, nuclear reprogramming, and regenerative medicine. Buganim is an international HHMI (Howard Hughes Medical Institute) scholar and is renowned for his pioneering research in cellular reprogramming, transdifferentiating, and epigenetics, contributing significantly to the understanding of cell fate acquisition and advancing the fields of developmental biology and regenerative medicine.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Buganim completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in life sciences at Bar-Ilan University, graduating with distinction. His M.Sc. research concentrated on developmental biology, utilizing the Drosophila Melanogaster model as a powerful tool to investigate fundamental developmental processes. He pursued his Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science under the guidance of Prof. Varda Rotter, investigating tumor suppressor activity and the interplay between p53 and oncogenic Ras. During this time, Buganim made critical discoveries about cancer mechanisms, which were published in leading scientific journals.

Following his Ph.D., Buganim conducted postdoctoral research at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at MIT under the mentorship of Prof. Rudolf Jaenisch. There, he explored the molecular mechanisms underlying cellular reprogramming to pluripotency.

Academic and Research Career

[edit]

In 2014, Buganim joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as a faculty member in the Department of Developmental Biology and Cancer Research. Since then, he has led groundbreaking research in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.

Key Research Contributions

[edit]
Cellular Reprogramming and Direct Lineage Conversion:
[edit]
  1. Revealed late hierarchical phases in reprogramming, highlighting the pivotal role of SOX2 in initiating the late deterministic stage of the reprogramming process.
