Lidewij de Koekkoek (born 1963) is a Dutch art historian and museum director, known for her leadership roles in several prominent Dutch museums, including the Rembrandt House Museum and the Frans Hals Museum.[1]

Education and early career

De Koekkoek studied art history at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She began her career in contemporary art and architecture before transitioning to the heritage sector. Her early professional experiences include positions at the Dutch Textile Museum in Tilburg, the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam, and the Dordrecht council.

Leadership roles

In 2008, de Koekkoek was appointed director of the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. Under her leadership, the museum underwent privatization, renovation, and rebranding, focusing primarily on old and modern art.

In October 2016, she became the General Director of the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, where she implemented a new artistic direction emphasizing Rembrandt's life and work.[2] During her tenure, the museum hosted notable exhibitions, including "Glenn Brown" (2017), "Ferdinand Bol & Govert Flinck" (2018), and "Rembrandt's Social Network" (2019). She also prioritized diversity and inclusion, collaborating with initiatives like Musea Bekennen Kleur and participating in the international OFBYFOR ALL program.[3]

In March 2022, de Koekkoek assumed the role of Managing Director at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, succeeding Ann Demeester.[4] She expressed enthusiasm for leading a museum that integrates old,[5] modern, and contemporary art,[6] emphasizing its societal role and commitment to addressing topics like diversifying the canon of Dutch history and promoting polyphonic perspectives.[7]

Throughout her career, de Koekkoek has been dedicated to engaging diverse audiences with art, architecture, and heritage. She has been an active member of CODART since 2009, contributing to the network of international curators of Dutch and Flemish art. Her leadership is marked by a commitment to inclusivity and expanding the narratives presented within museum contexts.[8]
