The Diocese of New York and New Jersey is a diocese of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) that covers the states of New York and New Jersey. The Cathedral of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, located on Second Street in Manhattan, serves as the diocesan cathedral, while diocesan administrative offices are situated in Syosset, New York. The diocese is currently led by Archbishop Michael Dahulich, who became its bishop following his consecration on May 8, 2010.

History

[edit]

The Diocese of New York and New Jersey was formally established after the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) was granted autocephaly in 1970. Initially, the diocese served as the see of the ruling hierarch of the OCA's mission and later became the see of the ruling hierarch of the autocephalous Church, supporting the national administration. The diocese's administrative offices were first located in New York City at the Holy Protection Cathedral and later, around 1967, moved to Oyster Bay Cove, New York.

In 1981, with the establishment of the Diocese of Washington, the metropolitan and primatial see was transferred to the new diocese, leaving New York as a local diocese.

In 2005, the Diocese of New York and New Jersey was merged with the Diocese of Washington to form the Diocese of Washington and New York. However, it was restored as a separate diocese in 2009, with Metropolitan Jonah serving as Locum tenens while still remaining the bishop of the Washington diocese.

Following the restoration of the diocese, meetings were held to prepare for the election of a new hierarch. Eventually, Fr. Michael Dahulich was chosen and consecrated in the spring of 2010. He remains the current bishop of the diocese.

The oldest church in use within the diocese is Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Buffalo, New York.
