Apolemia destroying salmon farming in Norway

[edit]

Over the past three years, during the autumn season, salmon production in Norwegian fjords has suffered significant damage due to toxins released by the nematocysts of Apolemia jellyfish. The presence of this species in the region is not a recent development; however, its impact has emerged as a significant threat to the industry on a larger scale in recent years. While the exact number of deaths caused by these jellyfish remains uncertain, it is clear that hundreds of thousands of fish, ranging from smaller sizes to those ready for slaughter, have perished in sea cages across the fjords. This phenomenon may be largely attributed to changes in salinity and freshwater levels in the fjords, driven by glacier melt caused by global warming and the resulting decline in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
