Q: There are many "rules" associated with this page. Why?

A: Recent deaths is one of the most-viewed articles in Wikipedia. Deaths in 2024 was the most-read Wikipedia article in 2024, with 50 million views.[1] It is important that such a high-profile article have factual information presented in a consistent format.

Q: Why are there redlinks or redirects (deceased subject with no Wikipedia article) listed in the article?

A: Many notable people die before a Wikipedia article is written about them. The regular editors of this page have agreed that a death notice without an English-language article may remain for one month after the death, so that an article may develop. If there is no article after one month, then the death notice is removed from the list.

Q: Why is each death sourced by a simple citation only?

A: Each month, over 1000 deaths are reported. If the "cite news" template were used in each entry, the page would be slower to load as each instance of the template is rendered. Editors have decided by consensus to use a simpler cite in the form <ref>[url, title]</ref>.

Q: Why are dead animals sometimes listed in the article?

A: Many animals (like Lonesome George) achieve notability similar to humans during their life. This article reports the death of any notable biological life with its own article, not just humans.

Q: I saw on social media that a notable person has just died. May I add this death to the list?

A: Material about living persons (or recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced is removed immediately and without waiting for discussion (WP:BLP). Blogs and social media sites are generally considered to be unreliable. Every death listed must be supported by a reference from a reliable, independent source.

Q: A new month started five days ago. Why are deaths in the old month still appearing here?

A: It takes some time for deaths to be reported in the media and published here. Editors have agreed to keep the old month listed in the article for seven days after the new month begins. After that time, the "old" deaths are transferred to the article Deaths in <old month name>.

Q: Why is there sometimes a date without entries at the top of the page?

A: A new date is added after a new day starts in the time zone that first starts a new day. A relevant time clock can be found here.

Czechoslovakia

@Huferpad: and @Noel baran:, you have both changed the entry for Ján Zachara to say "Slovak" rather than Czechoslovak. As the top of the page says, entries are supposed to be listed by country of citizenship at birth. Please do not remove the mention of Czechoslovakia, Zachara was not born in the modern state of Slovakia. Di (they-them) (talk) 20:55, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That remark means that if, say, a German person was born as French, he will be listed as French-born German and not just German; it does not mean that the country of citizenship at birth is listed as it was if it changes status or name. You can see in the January page alone there already are 4 other entries (and countless more in the previous years pages) that are listed as Russian, Ukrainian and Slovenian instead of Soviet, Soviet and Jugoslav. I agree that the remark may be phrased in a confusing way but it's made clearer by the following entry, which says "subsequent nationality", so in Zachara's case it should at least be Czechoslovak-born Slovak. However, by consensus, we never list that in such way when the subsequent country is a successor state of the previous one (i.e., we don't say Soviet-born Russian or Jugoslav-born Slovenian but just Russian and Slovenian). • Huferpad talk 21:23, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Czechoslovakia is not generally used for demonyms in the modern day because Czechoslovakia does not exist in the modern day. The constituent former states (now countries) do, so that's what is generally used and accepted for use. Ref ^(chew)(do) 23:00, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This issue has been raised before... and to reiterate once more... The stated policy of including "citizenship at birth" is at variance with the enforced policy of ignoring formerly-extant citizenships.

The source for Noreen Riols (died 2 January) is hosted at after.io, which seems to be an unmoderated website, similar to findagrave. I think we need a better, reliable source. WWGB (talk) 04:26, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Loewe on Forevermissed.com seems to be a similar case, also an unmoderated website. If proven to be false, an intentional forgery can be suspected in both cases, probably by the same person.--84.176.226.60 (talk) 10:45, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not a better source, but this social media post by another faculty member at Cambridge (his alma mater/work institution) makes reference to his death, so news of his death is likely accurate: [2] [3]. This issue with Forever Missed obviously goes deeper - so far I have posted Better Source tags back to January 2022. It's amazing how many times the site has been passed as reliable previously. Ref ^(chew)(do) 22:27, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have gone as far back as Deaths in 2017 in attaching the necessary tag to Forever Missed source entries - at this point, somewhere around the middle of the year, use of the site appears to stop. I'll leave it there. Ref ^(chew)(do) 17:13, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes deaths will go unreported without obituaries being published, though will be mentioned on social media (or in a very basic obituary giving only a full name, birth and death date). In some of these cases it is sometimes helpful to send an e-mail to the obit desks of reputable sources such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Hollywood Reporter, Globe and Mail, etc. to give them a heads up. There is no reason to think he'd "definitely" get a source about his 100th birthday. Many centenarians don't. That being said, the fact that he has a faculty page isn't evidence he is still alive, either. Nohomersryan (talk) 18:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
