Some copy cleanup, a couple of ref questions, and a pleasantly done article on a Vital topic. Ping me when addressed. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 06:21, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know? If you fancy doing so, I always have plenty of GA nominees to review. Just look for the all-uppercase titles in the Television section. Reviews always appreciated.

Etymology

  • Italian zibetto, (the civet) Remove unnecessary comma.
    • Done.

Description

[edit]
  • The durian fruit can hang from any branch, and matures roughly three months after pollination. Remove comma WP:CINS
    • Ah, you've made a page about this. Thing is, British diction differs from American diction: we simply read (aloud) differently. Possibly a disclaimer to this effect should be at least a footnote in WP:CINS.
  • (the cave nectar bat Eonycteris spelaea, the lesser short-nosed fruit bat Cynopterus brachyotis, and the large flying fox, Pteropus vampyrus) Remove comma after "fox" for consistency.
    • Well, possibly as above, but that particular comma marks out a noun phrase as being in apposition to another noun phrase, here the English name and its Latin version. Thus (at least in BE) we say "John Doe, Master of Ceremonies, ..." and the MC is bracketed by a pair of commas that belong to it as an appositional phrase. Maybe this needs to be another footnote in WP:CINS. Comma usage evidently has multiple rules and it looks as if these may differ between language variants.
  • while D. kutejensis, is pollinated by Remove unneeded comma
    • Done.
  • They used to be grown, with mixed results, from seeds of trees bearing superior quality fruit, but now are propagated by layering, marcotting, or more commonly, grafting, including bud, veneer, wedge, whip and U-grafting, onto seedlings of randomly selected rootstocks. Consider splitting. They used to be grown, with mixed results, from seeds of trees bearing superior quality fruit. Now, they are propagated by layering, marcotting, or—more commonly—grafting, including bud, veneer, wedge, whip and U-grafting, onto seedlings of randomly selected rootstocks.

  • May be worth introducing the D24 a little bit since it's mentioned here only once.
    • Added.
  • The flesh is thick, not solid, yellow-coloured, and has a sweet taste. With "thick, not solid" as a list entry, upgrade the other two commas to semicolons.
    • I think they're separate entries.
  • Is the mix of capitalization in the Indonesia list intended?
    • Fixed.
  • Kan Yao is less common, but prized Remove comma
    • BE.
  • On 22 May 2012, two other cultivars from Thailand that also lack the usual odour, Long Laplae and Lin Laplae, were presented to the public by Yothin Samutkhiri, governor of Uttaradit province from where these cultivars were developed locally, while he announced the dates for the annual durian fair of Laplae district, and the name given to each cultivar. Split this long sentence and maybe trim the back half, which seems excessive in context.
    • Done.

Cultivation

[edit]
  • Is Chantaburi or Chanthaburi (cf our article) a more common Romanization?
  • Durian was introduced into Australia in the early 1960s and clonal material followed in 1975. Add comma after "1960s"
    • Added.
  • The potential value for exporters has allowed China to leverage Durian as part of trade talks. Drop capitalization mid-sentence of "durian"
    • Done. Reviewers are actually invited to make small fixes of this kind, much quicker than creating GAN items.
  • Shelf life can be extended to around 4 to 5 weeks by shrink wrapping each fruit; this inhibits dehiscence, probably by multiple mechanisms: inhibiting respiration; reducing loss of water; holding the fruit's parts together; and reducing decomposition by microbes. Split this sentence.
    • Done. I note that in BE, a semicolon is a sentence splitter.

Flavour and odour

[edit]
  • While some of these animals eat the fruit and dispose of the seed under the parent plant, others swallow the seed with the fruit, and then transport it some distance before excreting, Remove comma after "with the fruit" (CINS)
    • Edited.
