Does ET the Extraterrestrial meet the criteria for a monomyth? KellyCoinGuy (talk) 16:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is mentioned twice in this "guide to monomyths", so I guess it does.--Mauri96 (talk) 00:41, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of Authors

[edit]

pretty self explanatory - should we add the authors of these books? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.225.57.22 (talk) 06:06, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Who decides which stories are monomyths?

[edit]

I was wondering what, if any, strict criteria was being applied to place stories on this list. The article currently has an original research tag and I think it's justified unless a source is provided that specifies why these articles are widely-regarded as monomyths. It can probably be argues that a great many stories are monomyths but the point is to document consensus, rather than speculation.

For example, if Campbell's original work identifies classic stories like Beowulf or the Epic of Gilgamesh that are monomyths, those can reasonably be included. But given that his book appeared in 1949, he couldn't possibly have claimed that Avatar or the Harry Potter series are monomyths! Warrickball (talk) 12:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Isn't this a potentially endless list unless it is better delineated? Some people might have written their work without any reference to Campbell, or even with an eye towards rejecting his ideas, but still be included on this list without any sort of serious review. What about just monomyths described by Campbell, and/or those whose authors have specifically cited him as an influence? That way people can refer to an existing publication to back up the claim that some work or another should be included on this list. Geeman (talk) 18:38, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
