Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
- Please refrain from using Talk:7 October Hamas-led attack on Israel for anything other than exactly an edit request, as per the requirements already outlined to you. No discussions, etc., only exactly an edit request. --Yamla (talk) 02:21, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

Goals of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood
[edit]Since the thread is closed I wanted to explain myself in more detail. First of all, it's always better to propose specific changes, for example "now this section says X, I want to add the following content ..."
Second, as a matter of policy we rely mostly on secondary sources (WP:SECONDARY). When Hamas publishes its goals, it's a primary source. When a scholar/expert publishes an article discussing Hamas's goals, this article is a secondary source. It's easy to see why we do it - in every conflict each side of it will try to present its position in the most faviourable light (Israel says that the goal of the war is to rescue hostages, Russia says that it just wants to protect the Russian minority in Ukraine, etc.) The declared goals may coincide with the real goals (which we usually can't know) and we rely on experts to make sense of the whole thing. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't mention the declared goals of this party, it means that we shouldn't give them undue weight. Alaexis¿question? 08:20, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- Dear @Alaexis, thanks for this detailed explanation. I really appreciate this. I have made occasional edits but I see now that I did not understood the policy about secondary sources. I was thinking (wrongly) that maybe there could be a new article about the goals, but now I see that would actually be a peer-reviewed academic article or a newspaper article that Wikipedia would refer and link to. So I get it now - it makes sense that Wikipedia is not where that analysis is happening, particularly for contentious matters. One of my 2025 goal's is to contribute more to Wikipedia, so I appreciate you taking the time to explain. All the best. Patrick PJQ33 (talk) 01:09, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
