The Country Girls/References section

[edit]

The first quote cited in the references section starts "n Ireland . . . ." It should begin "In Ireland . . . ." I've tried to edit it, but the references are blocked in edit mode. Can (1) someone fix it and (2) someone explain why it's not available for universal editing? Thanks.Cavan (talk) 13:28, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just out of curiosity

[edit]

Are you still doing motorsport venue maps? I ask because Taupo Motorsport Park actually has four configurations: http://www.tauporacetrack.co.nz/default.asp?sid=9&cid=16&aid=. B-Machine (talk) 17:58, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen your maps. I don't think they're deleting them. As for my email address, I don't know how encode it. B-Machine (talk) 17:56, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I tried to use your userbox but found it didn't quite work with some other userbox-related templates because it doesn't use Template:userbox. So I basically just copied the text and reformatted it accordingly. Thought I'd mention it just as an FYI (and if you want to copy/paste, it's fine by me). Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. A tag has been placed on User talk:Adamdaley requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

I simply would like to start my talkpage as a new talkpage. With an archive bot. Yes, in the past it has had a archive bot. While it states "User talk pages are usually not deleted." I would like my talkpage to deleted so I can start fresh, fresh with an archive bot of my choosing.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Austria-Hungary intro "too long"

[edit]

You placed a flag on the Austria-Hungary entry indicating that you think the intro is too long. Given the way the entry has evolved, there appears to be an implicit consensus against you, but maybe that's simply because no one paused to think about it. Till now.

It's one of those things that can be argued either way. But please can you take a couple of minutes to set out on the talk page in question why you think what you think? You must (presumably) have thought about the matter a good deal and have formulated in your own mind some well founded arguments. Or? So ... please share!

New deal for page patrollers

[edit]

Hi Will Pittenger,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

  1. Adjust number of entries and days at Last unpatrolled
  2. Editor-focused central editing dashboard
  3. "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
  4. Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
  5. Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.

Let's reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement!

[edit]

Hi Will Pittenger, please allow me to get in touch because you have stated sympathy with environmental causes on your user page. I would like to invite you to check out the Environmental impact project page on Meta, where I am trying to create some momentum to reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. My first goal is to have all the Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy. Maybe you could show your support for this project as well by adding your signature here? Bahrain circuit maps

[edit]

You put a note on these two circuit maps (long and short) that they are based on 8 June 2006 data. Do you remember what the data source was, and why the length doesn't match the official track lengths as used by FIA for F1 Grands Prix? cherkash (talk) 18:28, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I always use a length measured by Google Earth. That'll differ slightly from the official measurement. Will (Talk - contribs) 18:30, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You say you use Google Earth, but does it have enough precision to give you sub-meter readings along the full track-length? Especially since the length would differ depending on whether you measure along an exact centerline or are slightly off of it (centerline measurements is what FIA claims it uses for its purposes, and I'm pretty certain it's based on very high-precision survey maps and track design diagrams, in addition to on-site measurements – which usually tends to be more precise than aerial/space photos that have to be geo-referenced first and then manipulated to flatten them and fit them to scale, which would often result in some loss of precision, especially since geo-referencing is not always done on a very fine and precise grid for image post-production purposes). cherkash (talk) 18:39, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Technically I copy the KML to the clipboard and past into this site
I see. But this would be very imprecise: it depends on how exactly you (or someone else) lay out the lines and curves in the KML, etc.
As an example, on the Bahrain maps in question, you quoted length expressed in km/mi to four decimal digits. This corresponds to a measurement precision around 0.001%: 0.00005 (half of the last meaningful digit) divided by 5 km/mi (give or take). I don't believe with the method you described, you are anywhere even remotely close to achieving this precision. The errors of your method must be at least a couple orders of magnitude bigger. You should independently come to the same conclusion if you simply compare your measurement results against official track lengths (5.4068 km vs. 5.412 – a whopping 5 m difference, two orders of magnitude bigger than the 5 cm precision you implicitly used).
So may I suggest something? It may be time to reconsider using the lengths derived in this way – especially since official FIA measurement data is widely available. More generally, depending on how widely you use similar Google-Earth–derived data in your other contributions, you may want to seriously re-consider the precision with which you quote those numbers. cherkash (talk) 13:04, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, later maps have the figure rounded. I think the estimate is now 2 decimal places. Will (Talk - contribs) 20:29, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, good. Still wonder about the utility of including approximated figures like this in the images.
And which later maps? As far as I can see, the two originally mentioned images are still widely used across different languages. cherkash (talk) 15:47, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't updated that map if that's what you're asking. I don't have a list of maps I've done since then. Try checking my blog. Will (Talk - contribs) 15:59, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Updating Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon map

[edit]

Could you change the direction of the arrow in this image, as the curcuit is mostly run clockwise. And while your at it, could you maybe add a track map for the shorter Grand Pirx Circuit? It's 1.883 miles (3.030km) long. source Thanks! --Weldoffel (talk) 10:23, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, Inkscape is giving me grief at this time. Changes aren't possible. Will (Talk - contribs) 10:26, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mallory Park

I have just completed minor edits, and noticed that the prose (unchecked by whom) states Shaw's Hairpin, and this appears in your map File:Mallory Park track map.svg. I go back to 1964, and have always known this as The Hairpin or Shaw's Corner. I've mentioned this in the edit summary together with the following link showing a 1961 race programme.
