Check it in, check it out
It's the summer blues
Tear it in, tear it down
It's a good excuse...

Pushpa 2: The Rule 2,383,750 Clocking in at 200 minutes, the second film of the Pushpa film series from India was released globally on December 5. It quickly broke records, including becoming the country's top-grosser of the year and is currently its third highest-grossing Indian film of all time (for now). Baahubali 2 from 2017 is currently the second film and Dangal from 2016 is the highest-grossing Indian film.
List of highest-grossing Indian films 1,331,820
Gisèle Pelicot 1,286,876 This French woman became one of the BBC's 100 Women and a worldwide feminist icon following her decision to forgo anonymity in the 2024 rape trial (#15) of her husband and fifty other men. From 2011 to 2020, Pelicot was drugged and raped while unconscious by the men and was only made aware when her husband's computer was searched after his arrest for upskirting women and the rape recordings were found.
Deaths in 2024 1,051,461 I seen a rainbow yesterday
But too many storms have come and gone, leaving a trace of not one God-given ray
Is it because my life is ten shades of gray, I pray all ten fade away...
Carry-On 1,026,490 In Netflix's latest American action thriller, taking place mostly at LAX, a traveler (played by Jason Bateman who is absent from this list) really wants a piece of luggage to be placed unchecked on a particular airplane and reaches out to a TSA agent (played by #18) who really wants to be a police officer. Reviews have been positive, despite comparisons to another Christmas action film series, with mentions of the believability from its leading actors and plot plausibility.
Kraven the Hunter (film) 857,877 The success of Venom made Columbia Pictures think that any movie on a Spider-Man villain without the Webhead itself could be a hit, yet the rest of Sony's Spider-Man Universe proved them very wrong. The latest and possibly last has Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, who is reimagined as an anti-hero fighting poachers and mobsters, the latter including the Rhino, in a movie that tries a few things differently like making the deaths bloody, but was still met with scorn by critics and is far from earning back its budget of over $100 million. Let's just hope the upcoming Spider-Noir show makes up for all these disappointments.
Superman (2025 film) 838,704 From Marvel to the Distinguished Competition, who released the first trailer for the restart of their cinematic universe, that like the previous one just had to begin with the Man of Steel. Only James Gunn ditched away the grim Zack Snyder tone and just made another colorful and idealistic Superman adventure, and hopes are up for when Superman hits theaters in July.
Zakir Hussain (musician) 800,407 Regarded as one of India's "greatest tabla players of all time", Hussain died at age 73 of complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (film) 782,191 Two computer-generated animals arrived to contest for the Christmas box office crown. One is Sega's mascot Sonic the Hedgehog, that after two well-received movies returns borrowing heavily from Sonic Adventure 2, including the introduction of dark counterpart Shadow. The other is the lion Mufasa, who after that unnecessary yet highly profitable remake (that thankfully lost its title of highest-grossing animation ever to Inside Out 2) gets a prequel in the same photorealistic style. Both reviewers and audiences seem to be favoring Sonic, who continues to break the old trend of shoddy movies based on video games.
Mufasa: The Lion King 709,750
Red One (film) 638,207 Amazon MGM Studios spent over $200 million of the e-sales behemoth in a holiday action movie reuniting Dwayne Johnson and the director of the Jumanji sequels, where The Rock teams up with Chris Evans to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus. Mocked before release for its outrageous premise and huge budget (with reports that Johnson's bad behavior on set helped costs ramp up), Red One was not well-received by critics and couldn't even recoup its costs at the box office, but seems to have found an audience ever since it was added to Prime Video.
Elon Musk 623,105 The South African-Canadian-American owner of X Corp. and co-leader of the victor of #25's Department of Government Efficiency, Musk continues to make headlines. As someone who calls himself autistic, this entry's writer would also like to mention that Musk grew up with Asperger syndrome, which is considered part of the autism spectrum he likewise identifies with. Other opinions aside, Musk, like Temple Grandin and Greta Thunberg, is a powerful example of the capabilities people like this entry's writer can achieve.
Wicked (2024 film) 605,275 The November 2024 film indirectly based on The Wizard of Oz (with the latter film featuring one of this entry writer's favorite natural disasters) continues to entertain audiences. The 2024 film stars Cynthia Erivo and (the entry writer's favorite singer) Ariana Grande-Butera.
Travis Hunter 521,769 This American college football player recently won the Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious award in the sport. Hunter played on both sides of the the ball, as both a wide receiver and cornerback, respectively. Hopefully, he cleared off a shelf at home because he had numerous other awards. As is typical with Heisman winners, Hunter has already decided to enter the 2025 NFL draft, which is scheduled to occur in April.
Mazan rapes 511,634 Blink Twice had women being taken to an island, drugged and raped by rich people. Sadly, reality offers similar cases to that movie, as in a French city Dominique Pelicot took advantage of his wife Gisèle (#3) being unconscious from her pills to rape her and eventually started both adding more drugs and bringing in other men. And worse, he registered the rapes and saved the videos in his computer, which when uncovered revealed 72 men abusing Gisèle. 50 were identified and sent on trial alongside Dominique, and this week all have been sentenced to prison.
Gukesh Dommaraju 504,325 Gukesh D, at age 12, became the third-youngest chess grandmaster. Five years later, on December 12, he became the youngest undisputed world chess champion.
2025 PDC World Darts Championship 497,881 The 32nd rendition of this world championship began on December 15 at Alexandra Palace in North London. The final will be held on January 3, but we will report any notability here, such as Dutchman Christian Kist throwing a perfect leg in a losing effort in the first round.
Taron Egerton 471,325 This Welsh actor co-stars in #5, alongside Jason Bateman (who just missed the list). Egerton does his best John McClane in the film, as a TSA officer at LAX trying to thwart Bateman's bad guy.
David Corenswet 465,989 The title character of #7 is played by this American actor, seen earlier this year as a greedy storm chaser on Twisters.
Secret Level 462,772 Interest in this animated Amazon Prime series, featuring stories within the realm of video games (15 so far), began in August when a trailer was released showing highlights from various episodes. Speculation quickly spread when a likeness of Keanu Reeves appeared for the Armored Core episode. His casting, among others, was confirmed in October. The series released on December 10 and 17, in addition to a second-season renewal, as well as the Pac-Man episode tying into a future Shadow Labyrinth video game.
Gladiator II 453,929 Still holding up here is the sequel no one asked for yet got well received by critics (the National Board of Review listed it as one of the 10 best movies of 2024) and audiences (while still $50 million below the original, box office earnings of $415 million worldwide are still respectable for a movie with high content ratings).
Black Doves 425,510 In this new Netflix thriller series, Keira Knightley plays the wife of the UK defense secretary but is also a spy that must go even deeper undercover to protect her and her employer's identity. Knightley has already been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice award for her performance.
Saturday Night's Main Event 421,875 In 1985, WWE brought professional wrestling to broadcast television, mostly on Saturday nights and initially on NBC, even replacing Saturday Night Live on occasion. The series took a lengthy hiatus as the sport returned to cable television. On December 14, with WWE partnering with NBC's streaming service, Peacock, the series returned to the weekender slot.
Amad Diallo 411,044 On December 15 in this year's Manchester derby, Amad scored the winning goal in the final minutes to give United the victory over defending champions Man City.
2024 United States presidential election 403,093 The recently finished Yellowstone almost entered, yet had to stay off the list as readers are still trying to process the latest American election one month later.
