Ferhad Şamî (Sorani Kurdish: فەرھاد شامی), also known as Farhad Shami or Farhad al-Shami, is a Kurdish military leader and spokesperson.[1][2] He is a spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF),[3] a Kurdish-led alliance of forces involved in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) and regional security challenges.[4][5][6]
Early life and background
[edit]Ferhad Şamî was born in 1986 in the city of Al-Dirbasiyah in the Al-Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria. Little is known about his early life, but he grew up in a region with a significant Kurdish population. Şamî holds a degree in media studies, having graduated from Damascus University in 2010.
Şamî's professional career began with his involvement in media work. He started as a reporter for outlets close to the Kurdish political movement, including the Firat News Agency and Hawar News Agency, both aligned with the Democratic Union Party (Syria) (PYD) and the broader Kurdish nationalist cause. His media work extended to being a correspondent for Rudaw and Ronahi TV, both significant Kurdish media organizations.
His leadership within the Kurdish forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and later his appointment as head of the media office for the SDF, brought him into the spotlight. Before his tenure as the SDF spokesperson, Şamî served as the head of the media office in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (Rojava), particularly overseeing the Jazira Region between 2015 and 2016.[7]
Military and political involvement
[edit]Farhad Shami became known as a strategic figure and spokesperson for the SDF during its campaigns against ISIS.[8] He has participated in multiple military operations and has consistently advocated for the defense of Kurdish regions against external threats, particularly from Turkey and rebel groups.[9]
In public statements, Shami has emphasized the need for continued vigilance against the resurgence of ISIS and stressed the importance of international trials for captured ISIS members to address ongoing instability in the region.[10] He has also criticized Turkey's military interventions in northern Syria, asserting that these operations undermine regional stability.[11]
Shami frequently discusses the security situation in key cities like Raqqa and Manbij, which remain hotspots for insurgent activity. He has described these areas as resilient against external threats due to the strength of local defense forces and alliances.[12]
In his public addresses, Shami often calls for regional solidarity and international cooperation to ensure the safety and stability of northern Syria.[13]
