WikiProject Wikipedia spoken by AI voice is a WikiProject about making Wikipedia articles available in a new format: audio.
Goals
[edit]Welcome to the WikiProject Wikipedia spoken by AI voice. The goals of the project are to enable people to listen to any Wikipedia article by providing high-quality audio files that sound natural and are indistinguishable from human-spoken audios and making these accessible. This involves identifying and fixing any issues with these audios to improve their quality.
The goal is that the quality will be not only be as good as volunteer-read audios but better since these voices can be better suited for narration that is as listenable as audiobooks or podcasts (professional audiobook narrator voice quality). Basically, the eventual goal is to enable listening to Wikipedia articles to become as common in society as listening to podcasts to which many millions[1][2] listen on a daily basis and also to enable visually impaired people to listen to any Wikipedia article with a level of quality that screenreaders can't provide. Wikipedia would have a much wider reach, a larger impact, and contributions to it would become more valuable. Overall read/listen counts or length could more than double if this was widely available and accessible which includes people who are not avid active Wikipedians to learn about it or notice a play button.
If you would like to participate in this volunteer project which uses free open source software, you can optionally add your name to the list of participants. Keep in touch with project developments by adding this project to your watchlist and joining discussions on the talk page. Users can also request audios for individual Wikipedia articles here until this is scaled up. Various minor issues need to be fixed before or during scaling it up.
Activities
[edit]The current process is described at c:Help:Spoken Wikipedia using AI. It can take several minutes to generate an audio and as described on that page various things must be excluded or fixed for a good-quality result.

Examples
[edit]Due to issues with the audio player (used in {{Listen to this article spoken by AI}} above) like a missing skip x seconds back button, the best way to listen to these is to download these audio files and then listen to them using your preferred podcast player on your smartphone such as "Simple Audiobook Player". Other recommendations can be given on the talk page. Many websites like The New York Times or the PNAS journal recently added a button to listen to the article in audio format to its top but these are often or usually not as well suited for the audio format as many Wikipedia articles like those History of xyz articles or long (i.e. for most too long to read) articles about a broad subject like "Earth". You can also request audios for specific articles on the talk page:
